Melba is a Michigan transplant, originally from a small town in northeast Louisiana (Monroe). She moved to Michigan in 2021 just as the COVID pandemic was at its peak. A "baby boomer" and having been reared in the deep South, she is keenly aware of the polar opposite lifestyles, weather, and ideals of the two regions.
Melba came of age during the turbulent sixties. She has first-hand experience with the effects of questionable politics, the social stigma of segregation, and the all-encompassing aftermath of the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. Although these were the headlines of that era, she cherishes the memory of the delectable Southern cuisine...the freshly caught seafood from the Gulf of Mexico, the home-grown vegetables...mustard greens and purple hull peas, and hot-water cornbread.
She is a retired educator and the mother of three children. She loves to read, and her hobby is quilting.
She is a graduate of the University of Louisiana at Monroe and holds a Master of Education with certification in guidance and counseling. She worked in the Monroe City School System for thirty years prior to her retirement in 2013.
Melba enjoys the role of facilitator and assisting young people in setting goals, identifying and capitalizing on their strengths, minimizing their weaknesses, and formulating viable plans of action. She also loves to travel and meet new people.
